What is a Dietary Supplement?

According to the FDA, a dietary supplement is a product intended for ingestion that contains a "dietary ingredient" intended to add further nutritional value to (supplement) the diet. A "dietary ingredient" may be one, or any combination, of the following substances:

  • a vitamin
  • a mineral
  • an herb or other botanical
  • an amino acid
  • a dietary substance for use by people to supplement the diet by increasing the total dietary intake
  • a concentrate, metabolite, constituent, or extract

Dietary supplements may be found in many forms such as tablets, capsules, softgels, gelcaps, liquids, or powders. Some dietary supplements can help ensure that you get an adequate dietary intake of essential nutrients; others may help you reduce your risk of disease.

Are dietary supplements approved by FDA?

No. Dietary supplement manufacturers and distributors are not required to obtain approval from FDA before marketing dietary supplements. Before a firm markets a dietary supplement, the firm is responsible for ensuring that

  • the products it manufactures or distributes are safe
  • any claims made about the products are not false or misleading
  • the products comply with the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and FDA regulations in all other respects

What is the difference between a dietary supplement and a conventional food?

Conventional foods are foods that are not dietary supplements. A dietary supplement is a product taken by mouth that is intended to supplement the diet and that contains one or more "dietary ingredients." The "dietary ingredients" in these products may include

  • vitamins
  • minerals
  • herbs or other botanicals
  • amino acids
  • other substances found in the human diet, such as enzymes

Dietary supplements must be labeled as such and must not be represented for use as a conventional food or as the sole item of a meal or the diet. One way to distinguish dietary supplements from conventional foods is by looking at the nutrition information on the label of the product. Conventional foods must have a "Nutrition Facts" panel on their labels, but dietary supplements must have a "Supplement Facts" panel

Is a dietary supplement a food or a drug?

The Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act defines dietary supplements as a category of food. However, there is one exception: if a dietary supplement meets the definition of a drug, it is regulated as a drug.

You say that your product has been clinically tested. What clinical studies have been conducted on the Montmorency Cherry Capsules, made with CherryPURE®?

Four clinical studies have been conducted using Shoreline Fruit’s CherryPURE® brand powder at Texas A&M University. Two studies were conducted on muscle resistance training and two on recovery from endurance training. The abstracts of these studies are available on the "More" page under "Our Story".

What is the recommended usage for the best results when taking the dietary supplements?

For the cherry dietary supplements we suggest 1-3 daily with food.

What is Phyto-Preserve Harvesting Technology?

When we harvest our tart cherries during the warm summer months of July and August in our Northern Michigan orchards, the tree ripened fruit can reach temperatures of over 90 degrees. This is where our Phyto-Preserving Harvesting Technologies begin. The cherries are gently shaken from the trees into tanks of water from deep Michigan wells. The natural water temperature from these wells is around 50 degrees. This begins to drop the core temp of the cherry and helps to preserve the important phytonutrients found in this bright ruby red fruit. The fruit is further chilled at cooling pads with another temperature drop with hydro chilled water in the 30 degree range. The cherries are then transported to a refrigerated processing center where they are pressed into juice and the skins are sent directly into a deep freeze for storage until they are freeze dried and milled into a 40 mesh powder.

Are your capsules GMO Free?

Yes they are, just like many of our other Cherry Bay Orchard brand dried fruits and tart cherry concentrate.

Are your capsules Gluten Free?

Yes, the capsules are made from vegetable cellulose.

How much sugar is in each dietary supplement capsule?

Each capsule contains less than 1 gram of natural sugar from the fruit so they are considered low glycemic.

Are your dietary supplements OK to be consumed if you are following a Vegetarian or Vegan diet?

Our capsules are made from vegetable cellulose and are vegan, however the softgels are not.

You list other ingredients on your dietary supplements labels other than just the fruit powders or paste. Can you tell me what those ingredients are used for?

Yes, they are as follows for the capsules:

Vegetable Cellulose (capsule)

Is a pharmaceutical-grade, pure form of plant vegetable. It is milled into an extremely fine powder to assist the product to meet USP standards for gastric disintegration and to enhance nutrient bioavailability. It is the ingredient used to produce the capsule.

Vegetable Stearate

This vegetable-source compound is vital for keeping the powder ingredients from adhering to equipment during the manufacturing process.

Stearic is a natural fatty acid obtained from edible vegetable sources. It supports the flow of the product during manufacturing from initial mixing to final form, ensuring the ratio of nutrients is consistent from capsule to capsule. It is safe, and is suitable for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet.

Silicon Dioxide

Silica is the most abundant substance on Earth. This pure, pharmaceutical-grade silicon compound is insoluble and is not digested or absorbed in the intestinal tract. During manufacturing, it enhances the flow of powders and prevents material from forming clumps. This also ensures an even distribution of nutrient components throughout the batching process so that the products uniformly meet or exceed nutrient label claims.

The other ingredients are as follows for the softgels:

Olive Oil

Used as a vehicle to deliver the whole fruit paste into the gelatin capsule (aids flow-ability of the blend).

Sunflower Lecithin

Sunflower lecithin is used as an emulsifier to aid in evenly blending the softgel ingredients together.

Beeswax

Beeswax is used to seal the gelatin capsule during material encapsulation.

Gelatin

Gelatin and water make up the structure of the capsule itself.
